I had an aunt that recently died. She lived a fairly long life (90 years) and had a fairly prosperous life. When she died she left the family with her house and all her possessions. Most of her surviving relatives were pretty young so we all decided to sell what was left to us, including the house and whatever was left inside.

We spent about three months selling antiques, collectibles, and some appliances. We wanted to sell as much as we could both to return cash to the family and because we didn’t want our Aunt’s possessions just to go in the garbage. But after three months  we were left with about four rooms filled with, well, less than desirable stuff. Junk essentially. 

Summer was coming and the real estate agent that agreed to sell my Aunt’s property wanted to get it on the market by the Summer. So we were faced with a conundrum. How do we clean up a house and get it ready to show in about two months?

Trash & Lies

I hate trash, i really do i despise it! Why you may ask? Well let me tell you a story about trash and lies. Junk removal was my business, i would show up and get rid of trash and debris from residential and commercial properties. One day i arrived to get rid of a large dump load from a city parade the previous day and had way too many items to take of myself. When i arrived, the customer had already been given an estimate over the phone. Approximate, but not exact they were given the closest price that would befit what was described over the phone.

When me and my workers arrived we were ready to go and get the job done just as we always do. We did the hard work and picked up all of the junk and trash that the customer had available. It was a tough and grueling job because it was also about the hottest recorded date of the summer so far!

After we were done and used our teamwork to get rid of all the junk we met up with the customer to settle up on payment. It was a little more than what they described over the phone so we gave them the correct and fair price. The customer then refused to pay the amount! Can you believe that a person would do that? They argued with me until i had no choice left but to waste another 40 minutes on this job as we unloaded all of the trash and placed it in the same spot we had lifted it from. This was one of the worst junk removal jobs i had to do because of a finicky customer!

You could take the easy road and do the exact same thing to someone else and dump that thing in his or her property in the middle of the night. But if you’re someone with a conscience or someone with morals, then you wouldn’t. Like it or not, you have to get rid of the junk yourself.

 

One way to do it is to call the city and ask for a bulky item. This is probably the most affordable way to get rid of it. But there is a downside though; the city only picks up once a week. So if you missed your window then you will have to wait for a week.

 

Another way to do it is if you have a pick up and the muscles to do some heavy lifting, then load up the junk and take it to the dump and pay for the disposal. I’m sure this sucks but at least you got rid of it.

 

Now if you can lift the trash or don’t even want to touch it, there are companies out there that specialize in these bulky item pick-ups. They have guys that can do the lifting for you then they load it up in their truck and dispose of it. It not free of course, but then again so is most of everything else.

1.The first one is an oldie but a goodie. Recycle your cans and bottles! Nothing can be easier and in the long run pays off because you can get cash for all those bottles and containers.

2. Re-use those scraps of paper for various uses! Remember that not your loved one left you this morning? Well you can keep it and re-use by leaving another note on the back!

3. If you change your own oil, make sure you save it and take it to a location that can dispose of it properly. That one will really help our environment.

4. Turn off all your lights and appliances when not in use. This one is also a no brain-er as it saves you money when you aren’t wasting electricity.

There are a lot of other methods beyond just hauling something to a recycling center. I used to work for a junk removal service and we found a million ways to recycle unwanted, unloved, or even broken items. 

1. Donation

Donation to local charities and thrift shops was one of the main avenues we used to get rid of other people’s “junk”. Many charities and thrift shops have items they are actively seeking. So I kept in touch with a network of local thrift shops and when an item they needed sprang up in your junk truck off it went. You can do the same thing, and even get a nice tax write off for it.

2. Yard Sales

This is a time honored classic, but a time honored classic that works. When I worked at a junk removal service he used to have biannual yard sales where we sold items we had collected over the previous six months and sold them. In turn our company donated the profits to charity.

3. Creative Re-Use

My then girlfriend (now wife) was an Art Major with a quirky side. She showed me that many conventional household items we’d normal throw away could be reused for fun, funky house decorations when she took a blender and repurposed it as a vase.
