My friend just recently called me up and asked me for some help cleaning out his house because the city was planning on evicting him. Now if you don’t know my friend (which i’m sure you don’t) his place is a total pig stye and i really wanted to say no and go about my day being lazy. I had an aunt that recently died. She lived a fairly long life (90 years) and had a fairly prosperous life. When she died she left the family with her house and all her possessions. Most of her surviving relatives were pretty young so we all decided to sell what was left to us, including the house and whatever was left inside.

We spent about three months selling antiques, collectibles, and some appliances. We wanted to sell as much as we could both to return cash to the family and because we didn’t want our Aunt’s possessions just to go in the garbage. But after three months  we were left with about four rooms filled with, well, less than desirable stuff. Junk essentially. 

Summer was coming and the real estate agent that agreed to sell my Aunt’s property wanted to get it on the market by the Summer. So we were faced with a conundrum. How do we clean up a house and get it ready to show in about two months?

We called a junk removal service. The junk removal service we called specialized in estate clean ups and they had done this a million times before. Using a junk removal service saved everyone else a lot of time and did our estate clean up in about a day.

I hate trash, i really do i despise it! Why you may ask? Well let me tell you a story about trash and lies. Junk removal was my business, i would show up and get rid of trash and debris from residential and commercial properties. One day i arrived to get rid of a large dump load from a city parade the previous day and had way too many items to take of myself. When i arrived, the customer had already been given an estimate over the phone. Approximate, but not exact they were given the closest price that would befit what was described over the phone.

When me and my workers arrived we were ready to go and get the job done just as we always do. We did the hard work and picked up all of the junk and trash that the customer had available. It was a tough and grueling job because it was also about the hottest recorded date of the summer so far!

After we were done and used our teamwork to get rid of all the junk we met up with the customer to settle up on payment. It was a little more than what they described over the phone so we gave them the correct and fair price. The customer then refused to pay the amount! Can you believe that a person would do that? They argued with me until i had no choice left but to waste another 40 minutes on this job as we unloaded all of the trash and placed it in the same spot we had lifted it from. This was one of the worst junk removal jobs i had to do because of a finicky customer!

If you ever found yourself in a situation where you wake up one morning and you see a sofa or table on your driveway of front lawn that somebody just left there, then you’re pretty much screwed with it. Unfortunately, California law says that you are responsible for the junk and trash in your own property.

 

You could take the easy road and do the exact same thing to someone else and dump that thing in his or her property in the middle of the night. But if you’re someone with a conscience or someone with morals, then you wouldn’t. Like it or not, you have to get rid of the junk yourself.

 

One way to do it is to call the city and ask for a bulky item. This is probably the most affordable way to get rid of it. But there is a downside though; the city only picks up once a week. So if you missed your window then you will have to wait for a week.

 

Another way to do it is if you have a pick up and the muscles to do some heavy lifting, then load up the junk and take it to the dump and pay for the disposal. I’m sure this sucks but at least you got rid of it.

 

Now if you can lift the trash or don’t even want to touch it, there are companies out there that specialize in these bulky item pick-ups. They have guys that can do the lifting for you then they load it up in their truck and dispose of it. It not free of course, but then again so is most of everything else.

We are the new Green Planet Junk Removal blog. This space will be dedicated to bringing you the best news and opinions from the world of recycling, trash removal, garbage disposal, and junk removal. We’ll mostly be talking about these topics in reference to the greater Los Angeles area.

Trash removal and disposal is a burgeoning problem for the United States. The average American produces hundreds of pounds of garbage and trash per year. This is true for every man, woman, and child living in Los Angeles today. If we don’t learn to control and reduce our trash output we will soon be a city, a state, a nation awash in trash. 

So what can you do to help? To change the course of events so our children’s future isn’t buried under a mountain of styrofoam cups? You already know the answer. Reuse, reduce, recycle. 

Reduce … your consumption. We don’t need half the items we think we need. We also can do without disposable cups, plates, and silverware. Instead of paper bags use reusable lunch bags. Instead of one time use plastic bottles, use multiple use stainless steel bottles that will last a lifetime.

Reuse … Before you throw something away, ask yourself, can I reuse it? Chances are the answer is yes. So reuse items like plastic bags more than once.

Recycle … Recycling is a lot easier today. Most of Los Angeles, including apartments, have a recycling program. Take advantage of these programs and recycle. You’ll be amazed at the things you can recycle.
